You obviously have limited/no experience around mountains.

I loved living in San Francisco for the three years I could afford it & now live in Arizona. Both the ocean & the mountains hold magic for me. Every sunset here is spectacular. I just hold my breathe & have to say wow.

I'm planning on exploring Tennessee also though. I haven't been through a summer here yet but, having spent most of my life in Minnesota, I am really loving the weather right now.

That's like saying what can you do at the beach but walk up and down the coast?

For me it's all about the desert. But I prefer mountains. They're the last bastion of blessed silence in a noisy world.

lets see...
swimming - beach, maybe mountain if it has lakes
fishing - both
hiking - mountain, unless a walk on the shore constitutes hiking
birding - both
skiing - both
water craft - beach, maybe mountain if it has lakes
atv - both
camping - both
views - both
disruption of views - both, oceans get boats large and small, mountains get air traffic and recreational vehicles
health - beaches are sea level, plenty of oxygen and atmosphere to filter sun, consist of rocks and sand that may have fleas, bacteria, and cause abrasions, rip tides, hurricanes, and tide cycles can catch people unaware. Mountains are elevated, could present shortness of breath or higher UV exposure, have ticks and biting insects, rocks, and opportunity for falls, rock/mud slides, avalanche, and fires.
predatory animals - beaches may have sharks. Mountains may have bear or cougars.

Seems like a wash based on personal preference.
