Parts of Nassau are probably better than many smaller cities in the interior. Southwestern Nassau in particular. It's not great, but it could be done. Job location would be a big factor.

How much is too much for you? Some of Far out Queens isn't that pricey for walkable, safe city standards. Might not be worse than Chicago.
