The American College of Sports Medicine 2014 Fitness Index has been released. Finally, someone didn't put a list in slideshow! They are ranked by MSAs with methodology described here. Methodology - American Fitness Index

1. Washington DC
2. Minneapolis
3. Portland
4. Denver
5. San Francisco
6. San Jose
7. Seattle
8. San Diego
9. Boston
10. Sacramento
11. Salt Lake City
12. Hartford
13. Raleigh
14. Austin
15. Chicago
16. Atlanta
17. Pittsburgh
18. Cincinnati
19. Los Angeles
20. Philadelphia

The whole top 50 rankings and all kinds of additional info here. 2014 AFI Report - American Fitness Index

Washington DC being tops isn't surprising to those of us who watch House of Cards. Fitness is important to politicians. Frank Underwood got a lot meaner once he started using his fitness machine that Claire bought him. Lean and mean.

Nicely done Minneapolis! People do live active lives up there in spite of the cold winters.

Lots of Western cities. No surprise there.

Denver still solidly in the Top 5.

Only one Texas city in the Top 20. Houston and DFW moved up a bit from 2013, but both cities are still near the bottom (35th and 38th, respectively).

I expect Austin to rise several places and Denver to drop in the rankings next year due to my move in February from Austin to Denver.

Nah. Just get a yearly state park pass ($70) and hike it off like I did. Took a couple longish hikes over the summer (6 & 8 miles). Gonna try to do a 10-15 mile hike next summer and summit a few 14ers. There are a ton of outdoor activities. You won't need a gym membership unless you absolutely want one.

No brainer, that Sacramento is in the top 10 for most Fittest-Healthest Cities. It's been that way for a long time.

It is easy to be fit here:

Our weather is fantastic - 6 mons rainless, 3rd most sunniest large metro in the nation, by Colorado "measurements" we have 365 days of Sun, almost never gets below 30 degrees, but we still have 4 seasons.

Never gets too cold, doesn't snow, but TONS of mountainous snow in the nearby Sierras.

Of the US Pacific States, Sacramento is closest to some of the best US Pacific-West ski resorts with the largest variety of ski resorts.

Lakes and rivers to recreate in the Summer. Lots of parks and biking trails.

Sacramento is in a great location for nature and the outdoors.
