To me it's very important to be able to walk, bike, and/or ride transit to get where you're going. I despise cities/towns that don't even have sidewalks on the main surface streets. There are far too many cities like that where you literally have to drive everywhere. I also hate if it's so crime infested and run down, especially gangs, where if you walk into the wrong neighborhood you risk death for "not belonging". And places where minorities tend to be highly cliquish such that white people are not welcome in that part of town. I don't have a desire to get into any of that kind of nonsense.

Music: I'm talking classical ... especially vocal music ... especially old vocal music 9th to 18th centuries. I'm also talking all kinds of folk and world music. I love the musics of Peru and Japan, of Cuba and Mexico, of Iran, of India, of Jamaica ... of so many parts of the world. And old time country. And country blues. And Mississippi Delta Blues. Dixieland. Bluegrass. Heck even the Beatles and Zeppelin and Rush. Music is my passion.

Access to nature: It doesn't have to be anything special. I find the beauty of every natural habitat and nothing is boring except perhaps miles and miles of short grass steppe ... but you know what? Even that is OK. The grassland changes with the seasons and you can spend a lifetime learning it's rhythm. But I'll admit ... I love trees ... all kinds of trees. Nothing is better than trees..

Good local food: I'd love to grow some of my own. Hunt some of my own. But access to good local produce and free range meat is a must for my ideal place.

Thank you for the help. I may be banned soon for my threads on the psych forum but I'll read the replies to this thread regardless.

Note: I can only give quick reputation with my browser but I do so liberally.

I would suggest Asheville where you'll find not only the criteria you're looking for, but a widespread appreciation for it.

There are probably some neighborhoods within NYC that would have what you are looking for.

You don't mention size, cost of living, and climate, and those should be taken into consideration.

If none of those matter, I'd say that Seattle, Boston, and Washington, DC would be your best options.

If you want a bigger city but need a (relatively) low cost of living, consider Minneapolis and Louisville.

If you want a smaller city with four seasons, than look into Madison, Ithaca, and Burlington.

If you want smaller with a mild climate, consider Davis, California and Eugene, Oregon.

Thank you. Does anyone know any examples of these?

Thank you. I will consider all of those options because all of the factors you highlight are secondary in importance to me to the criteria I listed.

These would be my suggestions

Flatbush, Brooklyn--Very diverse. Lots of Caribbean and African immigrants. Centrally-located.

Brighton Beach, Brooklyn--Densely populated, right on the water. Very Russian.

Long Island City and Astoria, Queens--Extremely diverse. Wonderful location close to Manhattan and the trendier parts of Brooklyn. Gentrifying rapidly.

Tompkinsville, Staten Island--Quieter than other parts of NYC. Lots of trees, hills, and surrounded by water. The major ethnic groups are Guatemalan, Sri Lankan, Albanian, African-American, and Italian-American. You're a 20-minute ferry ride from Manhattan.

Hoboken, New Jersey--Dense, diverse, and hip. While it's a cheaper alternative to Brooklyn, its still not exactly cheap.
