My occupation is such that we can move to just about any place in the country and we've decided to relocate to someplace desirable to settle down and raise a family. We are a married late 30s couple with 1 young child. We are open to considering just about anywhere. Any advice you might have for where we might want to consider would be of great help. Thanks everyone. Re our budget our income is near the national average we are probably hoping to purchase a single family home around the median home price for the country. Re desires we're open minded and might be fairly adaptable to most areas although up until this point we have lived in many states throughout the South. We currently live in Birmingham, Alabama. Still not much to go on. I guess you want SFH to be affordable, but imo that leaves most of the country if you don't mind suburban living. Give us a little more if you can!
When I was thinking of desirable family-friendly and with no limitations on geography a place like Columbus OH came to mind due to the All-American vibe and quality of life for families. Columbus in general is economically well-off yet affordable, and suburbs like Westerville and Dublin ideal for raising a family in my opinion.
Thanks PM - yes we are open to considering the whole country, including suburban living. I think we probably prefer suburban living due to how far in the past we've been able to generally stretch our housing dollars in the suburbs of most metropolitan areas. We don't mind a 15-30 minute commute which is what we've experienced in most of the places we've lived so far. Re more specifics, I think we're probably looking for high quality of life, family friendly, lower cost of living, strong economically with a positive outlook for the area to continue to thrive. I know no place is perfect and has all of these traits but I think we're looking for somewhere with many of them.
Thanks Kyle - appreciate the suggestion...Columbus seems like an ideal place. I spent some time researching it as a result of your post and loved it. We like the idea of living in a college town and Ohio State seems to have a fun vibe to it. The public schools rate very high there also. Thanks so much.
Well, there are several top school districts in Philly and Pittsburgh, which are a bit lower COL than some other major metros. But not cheap compared to the really low COL metros. I think Austin and Raleigh are also good options. Kansas City and Indy have districts in their metros that pop up in rankings. But I dunno...I still almost feel like many cities around the country have suburbs that are fairly low COL and at least a few neighborhoods known for good schools. If you want to stay relatively close to where you are then I think Nashville and Raleigh are the places to look at.
