I saw a list of gender gaps based on census data. Here are the top 10 metro areas for each gender.
Female gender gap
1. McAllen TX 28.5% more women
2. El Paso TX 27.3%
3. Memphis TN 17.5
4. Bethesda MD 16.9
5. Birmingham AL 16.3
6. New York City NY-NJ 15.9
7. Baltimore MD 15.7
8. Little Rock AR 15.6
9. Columbia SC 15.5
10. New Orleans LA 15.1
Why do Mexican border towns McAllen and El Paso have such an unusually high % of women? Could someone explain it?
Most of the list are Southern metros with high black populations. I take it the very high rate of African American men in prison has a lot to do with it?
Male gap
1.San Jose CA 16.7% more men
2. Las Vegas NV 13.1
3.San Francisco CA 12.3
4. Honolulu HI 10.1
5.Austin TX 9.6
6. Seattle WA 6.4
7. San Diego CA 5.9
8. Salt Lake City UT 5.5
9. Poughkeepsie NY 4.2
10.Phoenix AZ 3.9
Western cities dominate the list of surplus men, especially cities with a lot of IT type jobs such as #1 Man Jose. The only city that sticks out as a surprise is Poughkeepsie.
