It now lists population for 2014 and percentage change 2010-2014 for places as well as total housing units for 2014, building permits issued by county for 2014, and other information. The building permit numbers are an interesting gauge of more recent activity or growth within individual counties. Those that saw 0 new building permits within a calendar year are generally experiencing rapid decline or out-migration.

Why don't they update land areas for municipalities and the resulting densities? It's one of those things that never seems to get updated until the next Census.

I am not sure why that is the case, but it likely has to do with official population counts that gets processed with each decennial census. The densities then get adjusted at that time.
