In general, are the traffic lights in your area mounted on poles or hung from wires? Where I live (Maryland), nearly all of them are on poles. There are a few that are still on wires, but they're gradually being replaced with the ones on poles. Also, I grew up in South Florida, and when I was there nearly all the lights were on wires. But in more recent years, it seems that they've been replaced with the ones on poles too.
Personally, I prefer the ones on poles. I just find them more aesthetically appealing, and I imagine they're less likely to be accidentally brought down as well.
So how are the lights where you live? And do you have a preference?
Arizona uses mast arms for permanent installations. Short term temporary installations typically use signals mounted on a portable trailer with foldable arms, while span wire signals are typically used for longer term temporary installations.
It seems the use of span wire signals for permanent installations are generally more popular on the East Coast than they are out west.
Nearly all of the intersections with a stop light here in Albuquerque are mounted on poles and masts. I can only think of two that aren't. Both of them have been that way since I was little, so about thirty years, so I don't think they are temporary situations.
The only stop lights in the Twin Cities that aren't on poles are at intersections that are under construction. There are places where that's permanent? Looks very Third World with wires.
- New Jersey, California, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Massachusetts all mounted on poles.
- New York State (excluding NYC & Long Island) hanging on wires.
- Florida mixed
Traffic lights hanging on wires ugly and 3rd world looking
Metro Detroit used to be almost all on wires. Now, the area has changed all of them to poles this last year. 100% are now poles - I was wondering why myself.
