Another Where to Live Thread I hate Seattle after 55 Years (real estate market, how much)

I'm 55 year old male from Seattle, and will be moving with my girlfriend 33 and our housemate 24 also female. I have to live near (within 50-75 miles) of a skydive center. That is not negotiable. Preferably one that is operational year around with temps 50 and above. I like to hike, stand up paddle board, surf, fish, and ski (last priority). I'm leaving Seattle because of the weather and traffic so I don't want too much rain nor do I want a ton of traffic. Ocean would be nice, but nice lakes, rivers, and such closeby would be okay. The two women would enjoy good night life, live music, and some entertainment (Malls and Movie theatres). Cost is not really a factor but I definately don't want L.A. San Diego, or San Francisco prices. The cost of living in a nice area of Dallas would be doable. I'm on the conservative side but coexist very well with liberals (I live in Seattle I have to). I don't plan on working except maybe very partime so job market is of no concern. Corpus Christi, Albuqueque, Tucson, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Denver, Boise, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, and Mobile are places I've considered. Thanks in advance.

There is a skydive place on 183, but traffic will be an issue.

iFly indoor skydiving is on 183 near Anderson Mill Road.

I suggest living in Cedar Park area for affordable prices and closeness to skydiving.

for real skydiving (since you mentioned temp) skydive san marcos so you would want to live in south austin

There is a simulator off 183 (love roses mentioned) call iFly. If you are practicing formations and that kind of stuff, I think the simulator is actually really good.

San marcos is around 2 hours from corpus and the gulf.

Austin has the highest priced real estate market in Texas, horrible traffic, and temps that often drop below 50 degrees as well as months at 90 and above.

What exactly is a "skydive center" an indoor training center that uses columns of air? we do have that, or something else? there is skydiving around Austin but not sure how much of the year you can do it.

Damn...a 33 y/o & a 24 y/o is impressive. But maybe dump one of them and cost of living becomes less of an issue. Or trade in a 33+24....for 3 women 19 y/o?


Seriously. New Braunfels & San Marcos might be a good fit regarding cost of living, live music & lots of water activities. You don't care about schools & there's bound to be a skydive center somewhere nearby.

There are a ton of sky diving places, though, so sure you could find one just about anywhere.

Traffic is very location dependent, so not sure I can help you there - Austin proper is pretty bad.

Surfing is pretty poor compared to the good places, but it is possible in a measly sort of way .

Skiing will have to be Ruidoso, NM or further. Water skiing and wake-boarding might have to suffice around here.

Paddle boarding is pretty big on Town Lake (aka Lady Bird Lake) and I see it out on Lake Travis, too (but it can be rough out there). Canoeing and kayaking (and tubing!) are more the speed for San Marco/New Braunfels, but you can probably board on sections of the Guadalupe (or on Canyon Lake).

Austin is your best bet.... It has all of the things on your want list.... Unfortunately, traffic does suck here as well. If you do decide to move here, take some time to drive around. You'll find that there ARE ways (sometimes) of avoiding the really bad traffic depending on your destination and where you're driving from.

If you don't want temperatures below 50, Austin isn't the place for you. We often dip into the 20's and occasionally the teens in the winter. I think Florida, Southern California and Southern Arizona are the only places that meet your temperature criteria. And as others have stated, you won't be in a better traffic situation here.

Do you really live in Austin? Last January we had two nights below 30 and none in February and none in December. Those are our coldest months and they average 61 to 68 for daytime highs. Two out of 90 is not "often in the 20s".

And BTW, you don't usually skydive at night, so the nighttime low temps are meaningless. Last Jan and Feb had 15 days when the high temps were below 50.
