Certain area codes seem to have a strong resonance with the people in that city. In Cleveland, a lot of people take pride in "The 216". They sell "Made in the 216" tee shirts, and I've even seen "216" tattoos. I know Chicago strongly identifies with 312. What other area codes do people who are from that city identify with, or take pride in?

I know 212 is highly prestigious and sought after in NYC, because it represents the original area code for Manhattan, pre cell phone era. Now, it's very rare if not impossible to be issued that without some sort of luck/quirk. I think NYC alone has 6 or 7 area codes these days.
412 is a very popular reference for the city of Pittsburgh. If you say "I'm from the 412" that means locally you live in the city of Pittsburgh (it also shares this zip code with a few inner ring suburbs). Most of the county and metro is either 724 or 814, but now 878 is prevalent as well.
There's a ton of 401 pride here in Rhode Island. It's the state's only area code.

I have a 212 cell phone. I dare you to find anyone else who can say that. The 212 area code has never been issued to cell phones.
Here's how I got it: When I moved to Manhattan in 1999 and connected my phone, the operator warned me that I probably wouldn't get a 212 number -- almost everyone was getting 646 at that point. She put me on hold and when she came back on, she sounded legitimately thrilled to report she'd found me a 212 number. And that was my number for a few years, until I decided to try Vonage, which was new at the time. They ported my 212 number over. Vonage, though, turned out to be terrible. Reluctant to go back to Verizon, I got my first cell phone and got the 212 number ported over to it. Even though I don't live in New York anymore, I can't bear to part with it.
