Lots of history and culture, very well-kept, slow-paced lifestyle and to me, it's more like a big town than a small city.
Im glad you feel that way. Its actually a medium sized city. But we do have such beauty here. Not to mention places like Maymont Park, Byrd Park, etc. I go to other places and realize how spoiled we are.
Belle Isle is one of my favorite parts of the country. I don't know why I love it there so much - incredibly peaceful and just pleasant. The footbridge is beautiful.
I grew up in a very urban environment in Atlanta, I love living in a big city, it has the subway, the city is high tech, fast, busy, noisy, bad traffic, urban living...all the things that make a city, the city. So, I chose ATLANTA, I love the urban vibe, i've heard people say it's not a southern city, just a city that so happens to be in the south..lol
Where's Charlotte, Miami, Jacksonville, Birmingham and Memphis? And what's Biloxi doing there among the others? It's just a resort, isn't it?
Well... To me I was even reluctant to put Atlanta. I'm talking about most beautiful, picturesuqe cities. Not that those cities you mention aren't attractive, but they are not what I think of in terms of asthetics. They are very modern built up cities.
In terms of natural setting, I'd say Key West, Miami, or Tampa.
I agree with Charleston. The other cities you mentioned though don't fit in the cultural /geographical definition of the Old South.
