Just went there and loved it!

BUT

The Morikami Japanese Garden in Boca Raton, FL beats the **** out of the Japanese garden in SF. Probably because a huge swatch of Japanese settled in the area after closure of the internment camps. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Coral Gables (basically Miami) are AMAZING. It's like being in Dr. Suess land. Tress and flora from all over the world. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden > Home Out of all the places I've been in the US, Coral Gables is near the top.

I took my mom to Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill this past Friday. It was mostly trees, the rose garden wall partitioned off. It had a few sculptures and a few minuscule waterfalls.

St. Louis' Missouri Botanical Garden, locally known as Shaw's Garden, is a national treasure not just for the fabulous garden but for the botanical research going back about 150 years. They also established a huge arboretum near Gray Summit MO back in the early 1900s because the coal soot and pollution was threatening the garden's plants. They seriously considered moving the garden but the air quality improved so they stayed. The Arboretum is a wonderful place to visit for classes or day hikes along the Ozark hills and river bluffs.

Not on the same level but pleasant and a great southwestern desert garden is Albuquerque's Biopark Botanical Garden.
