I was recently asked the question by a young person about what the future holds for America. While noting that we live in such a volatile & complicated time; I wasn't sure how to answer the question. Just what positive attributes does America hold? It is easy to be scared and to pick out the many things wrong with this country. Politics and negativity aside, my question is: what is good about America? Why should we be hopeful for a prosperous/peaceful/more equal future for all? Should we be proud to be American? Is this country falling behind like the media and many others would like to portray it to be? I realize this is a broad question but I appreciate positive & honest answers as I am curious as well. Thank you.
Conveniently located between Asia and Europe? Just kidding. Some ideas in no order:
#1 could be that it's set up pretty well for innovation. That will hopefully keep us prosperous.
#2 might be that we have a ton of natural resources, particularly farmland. Whatever happens, hopefully we don't screw that up.
#3 could be that aided by immigration, we won't have much of a population inversion like some countries. Dependents (particularly elderly) aren't overly numerous compared to working age people.
#4 is our diversity of climates. As climate change happens, we'll be more nimble than nearly everyone else.
The United States is an enormous country which therefore gives citizens a huge array of options and opportunities that are not afforded in other countries.
As for the media, media today is largely garbage that emphasizes the most extreme occurrences in the world merely to get publicity (distributing news is a money-making operation, after all). People living day to day normal lives in the U.S. are fine. Most U.S. cities are relatively safe and prosperous. Also, the U.S. affords its citizens with a great deal of legal protections which other countries are not able to provide. Although laypeople who don't understand our complicated legal system criticize that which they do not understand, it's still a reliable system, all things considered. I'd rather live in a litigious country where every person has the chance to have their day in court if they ever feel wronged than a country that simply won't listen to those voices that should (but don't) get heard.
One of the things I would say is an easy attribute is that the citizens of the United States at least have options when it comes to what sort of climate or environment they want to live in. Whether your preference is hot and dry, hot and humid, cold, chilly, the desert, alpine mountains, or a lowland swamp etc... you have the option as the geography of the United States offers various climates. Many other countries that I traveled to haven't had as many options in terms of climate/environment to live in.
The only positive attribute I can think of is we have the power to change our future. We aren't. We keep electing the same type of career politician to office.
American hasn't been the same since 9/11. I feel sorry for the younger generation that will never know what America was like prior to 2001.

If you are intelligent, well-educated and hardworking, then America will give you the best chance of achieving economic success. America has by far more self-made millionaires than any other country in the world.
Social mobility is very high in the US - despite the rhetoric otherwise.
US has the largest tract of arable land in the world. By far. Ukraine is the closest thing.
Mostly, the country is temperate
It has millions of miles of coastline important for tourism and trade
It is distant from nearly all discord in the world
The list goes on and on
