Isn't it a "dual city" Metro in Miami-Ft Lauderdale kind of like Dallas-Fort Worth and Minneapolis- St. Paul? If so, that would make Ft. Lauderdale NOT a suburb, but a second "core city" in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale Metro.
For the size of the metro, Cary is crazy large. In comparison to the 3 points of the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill), it's nearing 3X the size of Chapel Hill, 3/5 the population of Durham, and more than 1/3 the population of Raleigh.

Coral Springs-127,952
Miami Gardens-112,265
Pompano Beach-106,105
West Palm Beach-104,031
Also Boca Raton, SoBe, Sunrise, Davie and Plantation are 90,000+ so if growth remains the same the next official census could put them over the top.
Miami Beach will likely not reach 100,000 per the Census. It's only 7 square miles and much of housing is owned or being bought as second, third or fourth homes. Additionally, much of the new development is now geared toward retail and other tourist supporting infrastructure.
Miami Beach's population will likely stay in the low 90,000s for the foreseeable future.
More like a independent city and a county (in that order)
