Any Americans (of Asian descent) out there who grew up in the South and are proud to be Southerners/love Southern culture? What kinds of Southern traditions do you observe, and how has your Asian ancestry/ethnic background influenced other parts of your life? Do you speak with a noticeable Southern accent?

For everyone else, what has your experience been with people of Asian ethnicity in the South? When most people think of Southerners, the dialogue mostly revolves around White and Black Americans, which is to be expected. The video below is a great portrait of Americans of Chinese descent living in the Mississippi Delta, whose ancestors first migrated in the 1800s.

Yes. From West Virginia all the way down to Oklahoma and Texas, I consider these states the South, or at least having a significant Southern influence.

Ahh, I suppose I was thrown off by the white/black comparison in your OP. In Texas, Hispanics outnumber whites and blacks in all our major cities except Austin.

Well Texas, by far, has the largest Asian population in the South. Houston has the largest Asian population in the South and DFW has the 2nd largest. I its extremely common to meet native Texans who are also Asian. I dont think they really get a 2nd glance here. My wife is Thai but grew up in LA and she loves it here because of all the Asian markets and food. Plus most of her friends here are Asian as well.

Outside Texas, Atlanta has a healthy Asian population but its quite a bit smaller than Houston and DFW even though the Korean population is larger than both.

My grandmother worked for a Chinese store owner in the 1950’s and I believe 1960’s in the Mississippi town that they lived in. So, there are some people that are familiar with that narrative.

Modcut: Removed off-topic comment.

I used to have a coworker from the Memphis area who was some kind of East Asian, probably about my age (born mid-'90s). He had a weak Southern accent.

Around military bases, and in places like Norfolk, Hampton Roads, Jacksonville, Pensacola, you will find many Asian wives of servicemen who had been stationed in Korea, Philippines, Hawaii, etc.

Also, many Vietnamese refugees settled on the Gulf coast, including shrimp fisherman, while others were wives of servicemen.

Then there is Henry Cho, a professional comedian of Korean parents, raised in Knoxville, TN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HB3wac2Evs

In the Deep South, there are almost no Japanese. There are a good number of Koreans though especially around Atlanta.

I'll add Killeen. Lots of Koreans in Killeen, Tx due to Fort Hood. Korean owned barber shops and Korean owned restaurants.
