Just sort of pining for small town life. Don't have any preconceptions, or very specific desires.
I'd like to be able to look towns up on Google, or Zillow/Realtor, or youtube, or even on here. I simply know there are about a million of these towns, and no idea how to start sorting through them, since even "best small town" type searches on Google tend to focus on places 5,000-20,000.
Thought I'd throw it out to the group. A place you've lived, or visited, or heard about, or whatever. But one that struck a chord with you for some reason. And that's under 1,000 people.
Gainesboro, Tennessee. Population 945. Settled in 1817, county seat of Jackson County. Thoroughly rural, yet it just recently got gigabit internet. It's part of the Cookeville micropolitan area and is about 90 minutes from downtown Nashville.

Hill City, South Dakota (pop. 948). Located in the Black Hills about 25 miles from Rapid City and 10 miles from Mount Rushmore. Tourist season can be a madhouse, but winter in the Black Hills is amazing.
My grandparents lived somewhere near Cookeville growing up. Definitely interested in revisiting the area, which I haven't thought about since the Carter administration!
Winter in the Black Hills is amazing? I'd have bet on terrifying! But never been, so no rush to judgment.
I've always shamefully treated Indiana as a series of interstate exits. Glad to see an early suggestion from there.
Eureka Springs I certainly know of, but in a good way! I think it's just barely big enough to find it's way onto those Google lists. Hopefully it'll be a hidden gem for someone else reading along.

Keep 'm coming!
Indiana has some very natural, pretty areas. If you aren’t from there, I totally understand the “not think twice” about it type thoughts.
I went to school in Ramsey, Indiana, which is about 10 minutes from New Salisbury. Ramsey has a population of around 1400. Then there’s Palmyra, Indiana and Depauw, Indiana, all of these small towns are within 15 minutes of eachother, same school district, and same county
Places in the Finger Lakes Region of NY like Hammondsport and Aurora are known for their charm. I believe that Hammondsport was recognized as a “Best Small Town” in recent years too.
Philipsburg, MT pop. 920. It is the greatest small town. Close enough to drive to Missoula or Butte. Discovery Ski resort and Georgetown lake are right around the corner. Not far to Rock Creek where I almost died in a rafting incident .
Ennis, MT pop. 890 is a close 2nd. A 40 min drive from Bozeman. A little over an hour from West Yellowstone. Right on the Madison river with great fishing and rafting.
It's on US-395 in the Mojave Desert, east Kern County. It has a gas station, post office, and town park. It sits in a hilly pass over the desert floor. It has several homes that are quite old for the area, which are interspersed by mobile homes.
The kind of place where nobody would think to look for you.
