Currently we live in Flatland,USA (also known as Illinois or the Midwest) and are looking for greener pastures (somewhat literally). We are trying to find a place that fits the following criteria:

1) Lots of trees / mountains / lakes / forest
2) No desert / only rocks / sand / etc..
3) Moderate temps (days of extreme humidity or cold OK but keep to a minimum)
4) Home w/ 2 acres (+/-) within 45 min commute to a large hospital (both healthcare workers)
5) Housing costs Under $400,000
6) Outdoor activities that we can be alone or with others if we choose (very introverted family)
7) Within 2 hour drive to airport / museums / etc...
8) Slower pace of life a major plus!

So where are some places that are close to this? States we think would be good would be Washington, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia...... any else? Smaller (50,000 ish) towns in these areas?

Thanks for the help!

I think there's a lot of great places that fit what you're looking for. I'm going to recommend Cookeville, Tennessee.
  • Beautiful surrounding, nestled among hills and forests.
  • Four distinct seasons, generally on the mild side. There are a couple of weeks of high humidity in the summer and a few days of frigid cold in the winter. Average of 8 inches of snow per year.
  • Excellent hospital with one of the top rated heart centers in the country.
  • Plenty of outdoor activities: 100 waterfalls and 1,200 miles of lake shoreline within 40 minutes of town. There are several state parks within minutes of town offering miles and miles of hiking and biking trails, paved or otherwise. Kayaking is very popular in the area.
  • An hour from the Nashville airport.
  • Cookeville has several museums with, obviously, a lot more in Nashville.

Here's a sampling of what kind of privacy $400k can get you in Cookeville:

Cookeville has a population of around 35,000 but functions as a much larger town. Its urbanized population is around 50,000, and its daytime population is closer to 75,000. It's the center of a micropolitan area population of around 112,000 and is the hub of a 14-county region of 350,000. It's one reason its hospital is so large and it has so much more retail and restaurants than most other towns its size.

Another perk: Tennessee's very, very low taxes.

Given your criteria I think Asheville NC makes a strong case. There's plenty of inventory of very desirable homes within your price range, it offers safe neighborhoods with a definite slower pace of life, a fairly moderate four season climate, loads of outdoor activities in close proximity as well as many cultural events, an airport within thirty minutes with fairly decent service (Asheville) as well as Charlotte's airport two hours away, quality public schools and the presence of 1000+ bed Mission Memorial Hospital which should provide plenty of job opportunities. When sourcing housing in the Asheville area for commute purposes (especially in winter) it would be best to source on a north-south axis through town to avoid the interstates (I-26 and I-40) due to commute time issues and you'll find not only getting to/from work easier but also some of the more desirable (and quieter) neighborhoods on the north and south side are located along that axis many with very private settings not on top of other neighbors.

Perhaps Morgantown WV, which is within an hour and a half of Pittsburgh: J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital | WVU Medicine

You also have West Virginia University there, which offers more activities/events, if you want that.

Mission Hospital | Mission Health
Funny you mention this as we have been looking hard at Asheville, NC for a while now. In fact, I recently had a phone interview with Mission Health and am waiting to hear back if they want to bring me on site for an interview. REALLY hope to get the position, especially since it really does seem to be the ideal place for us.

That's awesome, I get the feeling you would absolutely love it there. Good luck!
