West Virginia should be on the top of this list. The most humble, down to Earth, real people you'll ever meet.

West Virginia. I can see that. I've been there numerous times. Never can get a gauge on the people, but it doesn't come across as being as status oriented.

Northern Maine. I'm not sure how far north that Volvo line goes, but I liked what I saw of the state. We looked into moving there once, even if in a daydream sort of way. Traditional. Seemingly detatched from the rest of us. Okay, the daydream is starting again...
I like big cities and what they have to offer, but it seems like states without them have an easier time fitting the criteria.

It's more groups of people who are like that than places. For instance, I live in Silicon Valley. There are plenty of materialistic people here, but they aren't the folk I run around with. Plenty of blue collar, down to earth people right here amidst the others.

You'll find more materialistic people in wealthy neighborhoods, or in areas where there are high-paying jobs. But, they aren't ever the entire population, in my experience.

And even in small towns, there will be that group of more well-to-do folks. You will probably have less of them in a poorer town, but they're everywhere. In small towns, they're usually the big fish in a small pond types.

Anyway, I think you can find like-minded people pretty much anywhere.
