The South likes to see themselves as different from the rest of America so they use the term yankee (originally a term for northerners) but used to describe any non-southerners. Southerners are very big on food, football, family values, yall and Christianity so it's very easier to paint the south as a broad paintbrush than other regions because it has so many vaules, and customs that spread throughout the region. The Midwest and even the Northeast it's harder to generalize because those reigons have cities and states that distinguish itself from each other.

As a de facto Californian (born in Oregon but raised in California) that moved to the South, I think that there are two narratives. 1) The stereotypical backward viewpoint, and 2) The Back-East narrative. I completely agree with those who say that it depends on where in the South one is considering.

I don't understand this statement. The different states and cities of the South are just as varied as those in the Northeast or Midwest. San Antonio TX, Lexington KY, Natchez MS, St. Petersburg FL and Cary NC are all in the South but very distinct from each other. They have completely different climates, cultures, economies and built environments. Even with many people in California (and elsewhere) having little knowledge of the South, they do often have a vague idea that Texas, Florida, the South Atlantic states, Mississippi Delta, etc. all have their own identities.

You are probably thinking of Greensboro (the names can get confusing with Greenville, Greenwood, etc. in multiple Southern states). I think many California residents who are open minded about the South would do fine in these areas and find others who have made the move already. Not to mention that those who visited the South a few decades ago would find many aspects are quite different now in 2018.

I meant Greensboro, sorry I liked the friendliness of people in the south, it was refreshing how many people would just stop and chat with a stranger.

This makes no sense. The cities in the South are every bit as varied as ones in the Midwest and Northeast. Tell me what San Antonio and Atlanta have in common? What about Tampa and Memphis? New Orleans and Charlotte?

The South identify with its region more than anywhere else, people from the NorthEast just say what city from "I'm a New Yorker" or "I'm a Bostonian" versus just saying I'm a Northeasterner, people from the Midwest just say what state thier from before there reigon. People from the south just say I'm a southerner while other regions identify with the local culture versus their region of the country.

And you'd be right.

I live in California. 45 minutes south east of Los Angeles. This place is a dystopia. I am so eager to move my family out of here.

I've lived in and have loved the South for most of my life. When I travel, I identify as an Atlantan.

When asked where they are from, I have never, ever, heard anyone reply with "the south". The south could be anywhere. People are most likely to say what state they are from and if they are from a large, decently known city then they will name the city. Why do people make these things up about the south? People project their own lack of knowledge onto the south almost everyday on this forum. The south is not a monolith. I have heard Californians state that they are from the west coast with the same frequency as a southerner stating that they are from the south. Honestly, east coast is probably the region I hear referenced the most but I would imagine that's due to where I live. No one, and I mean no one, defaults to their region when asked where they are from. It wouldn't be an answer to the question.
