Which of our states have metropolitan areas that contain more than one of the 5 largest cities in the state.

For example, in Illinois:

1. Chicago
2. Aurora
3. Jolliet
4. Napperville

5. Rockford

The four largest cities in the state are all in Chicagoland.

Here in Nevada, another highly geographically concentrated state like Illinois, 3 of the top 5 are in the Vegas area:

1. Las Vegas
2. Henderson
3. Reno
4. North Las Vegas
5. Sparks

And Paradise (where much of the Vegas Strip actually lies) would beat out Sparks and crack the top 5 if it were a city instead of an unincorporated area.

15 years ago, NC had two such metros. But the split between (3) Greensboro & (5) Winston-Salem and (2) Raleigh & (4) Durham means you have to looks at CSAs now. The closest you have now strictly for metros is Raleigh and (7) Cary.

According to the most recent Census estimates, for SC the five largest cities are

1. Charleston
2. Columbia
3. North Charleston
4. Mount Pleasant
5. Rock Hill

Charleston, North Charleston, and Mount Pleasant are all in the Charleston MSA, which is only the third-largest in the state. The largest MSA in SC is Greenville-Anderson and it doesn't contain any of the five largest cities in the state.

Well just looking at MSAs, Charlotte qualifies in a way. It is a bi-state metro that contains the largest city in NC and the fifth-largest city in SC (Rock Hill).
