I wouldn't say the humidity and heat is that bad. Yes the summers are longer than more northerly places but we have several more months of very comfortable weather compared to northern states. And I do think that we have a winter, even if its shorter than some other places. We're not hot year round like a truly tropical place like Miami.
Debatable. How are you defining comfortable? T shirt weather without being too hot? Up here that averages between mid April to mid October. Thats quite a long time. Summers are more comfortable than in Louisiana, as are springs and falls with the exception of the cold transitional portion.
Favourite and ya'll in the same post? Are you half-British/half-Southerner?
Lol. I've adopted British spellings since childhood. After a decade and a half, its just stuck. Also, I'm a writer. Lets face it... some words have a higher aesthetic value, even the same word with just a slightly different spelling. E.G. Theatre, opposum, glamour. But I prefer "check" over "cheque" at the same time, so its not true Anglophilia.
If any State reverts back to the old line "It's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there", California is it.
California is impressive in so many ways, the climate, the natural beauty, the laid back atmosphere, the attractive folks who live there, Hollywood...I could go on and on.
At the end of the day I have no desire to live there. For the obvious reasons...too expensive, too crowded.
Mine is Hawaii. Wouldn't wanna live there cuz I don't like tropical climates, plus the island isolation would get to me. But its a beautiful place that hopefully I can visit soon enough. Beautiful landscape, people, culture, history, music etc. Screw Texas... Hawaii is the one state that truly feels like its own country, and used to have a monarchy even!
What would y'all pick?
Hi BadgerFilms, do you mean full-time living only or also part-time living like for a few months at a time for the purposes of this thread?
South Carolina. I love to visit Charleston and Myrtle Beach, but the heat and humidity, bugs, hordes of people, overburdened infrastructure, and influx of transplants wreck it for me as a place to live full-time. Fifty years ago? Yes! Now? Never.
LA, to me, is beyond amazing. The weather, culture, beaches, palm trees, people, geography, close to the desert which is pretty, westher, so much to love.
Then I think how much I just appreciate the mass transit in DC and the general urbanity on a rather large foot print. The conveniences of some of the bigger east coast cities I would miss. But the weather, natural beauty, etc in California seem great.
I wish I could live everywhere lol. DC, LA, Las Vegas...
Anywhere but California lol. I know I'm the exception here. But I was born and raised in CA, lived in the PNW and in Tennessee, Mexico and Canada, visited Maine and Florida, and based on my experiences, weather-wise and economically-wise and even though I moved to Mexico because of being unhappy in the US, you could never convince me that living anywhere other than CA would be worth the "price." Whatever costs are associated with living here is more than worth it, to me.
I honestly think that if I had been born and raised there, I’d feel the same way. Or even if I lived there for only a few years, it would probably be very difficult to leave and give up so much.
CA gets bashed all the time. I don’t think it deserves such a high degree of vitriol. Wonder how that came to be so strong? Jealousy?

The major bashing it gets is from conservatives who hate everything it stands for, and potentially the fact that red states are often destitute like AL, WV, MS, KY, etc. Meanwhile, CA, with its "scary socialism" and being welcoming immigrants, is doing much better economically than most states.
You don't hear hatred of CA in more progressive places. Generally all positive things to say about it, but either it's too expensive to move there or it lacks public transit or something like that.

I really think of people from CA that hate the state is usually cost of living related. The simple idea that you can't afford a simple home in a state you grew up is troubling. If I wanted to live there and couldn't actually do it, I would be ticked too.
