TJs was planning to open a store in Ithaca, NY. I'm not sure if COVID changed or delayed these plans. If built, I think it would be the smallest city at metro population level.

Are Trader Joe's less cramped outside the northeast? I've only been in MA and NJ, and I associate TJ with super tight aisles and lots of people. Especially in Boston where I first encountered them.

I also just don't like them much...except somehow I like their conditioner a lot.

Just a guess - this location must get traffic from Tahoe? Seems to be the closest location to the lake. Not sure the demographics/size of Carson City alone would support the store, but maybe it would.

State College, PA is a city of about 42,000 residents. It is far removed from any of the big metro areas in PA. It has a TJs about a mile from Penn State University.

All TJ stores I have been to are relatively small, similar to a typical Aldi market in Europe. Not surprising, since Aldi owns Trader Joes.

Store layout is over similar nature and size just about everyone I have been to. So I'd generally guess that the denser geographies are more crowded. But I've yet to visit one that was noticeably larger than another in size

Often it depends on the architecture of the building they lease, so some are bigger and more spacious because they take over a slightly larger space. But their business model in general prioritizes more urban, neighborhood settings involving smaller square footage and tight parking lots. It's very intentional.
