Due to my dad's government job we did a **lot** of traveling across north america. In essence, we've lived (for a few years each) in every state except maybe three (but visited/stayed in those three for a bit, e. g. house searching) directly along the Canadian/American border from east to west coast.
To me given the majority is lived in - lived east to west coast is more accurate. If someone questioned that I'd explain yep everything but X, Y and Z state.
You should say you lived up North. If someone asked for where, say “all along the Canadian border” and then give your caveat of the three exceptions (skip the discussion of house hunting motel stays). “Traveling” makes it sound like a giant vacation. I don’t think the direction you lived in (east to west) is very informative or needed. The introduction of the concept of coasts for states like Minnesota just seems to complicate things, so I’d just drop that completely.
We can't give you "opions" if your question makes no sense.
