I am thinking of becoming a teacher (I start college in August), and I was wondering which states have the highest average high school teacher salaries. Thanks.

I think a better question would be, "where will a teacher's salary be worth more?" In other words, just because teachers in Connecticut or California make a lot of money doesn't mean you can afford to live comfortably there.
I'm a teacher in Knoxville, Tennessee. We don't make a lot of money here, yet I'm still able to own a nice home, drive a nice car and take long overseas vacations on my meager salary. That would not be the case if I were teaching in Hartford or San Francisco.

I think the best question would be: where's the best tradeoff between livable salary and decent work environment? NY City teachers make good money, but do you want to teach in a NY city school?
Parts of Texas have great teacher salaries, particularly around the metro areas of Houston, Dallas, and Austin/San Antonio.
The school districts around the D/FW are very competitive and the cost of living is relatively low there..

Exactly. Northeastern states may have higher salaries, but that's only to match higher costs of living. Southern and western states (with the exception of CA) tend to be much more affordable for teachers.
