As the title says which US City is the most important and which City THINKS it’s the most important? Or are they both the same city?

I think there's about 6-7 US Cities that make the country function.

DC
NYC
Boston
SF
LA
Chicago
Houston

Each serve an intricate purpose to the US' Success.

These cities are most important--

*NYC
*Chicago
*San Francisco
*DC
*Los Angeles

Very debatable, but these think they are most important:

*Miami
*Philadelphia
*Dallas

I think San Francisco thinks it's more important than it is.

The city itself, perhaps, but if you consider the whole Bay Area I would say no. I would argue the Bay Area has had a larger impact on the world over the past few decades than NYC has. Consider where we would be without the transistor for instance. NYC is no doubt the most influential city for banking and finance, but I’m hard pressed to think of some really world changing inventions from NYC; it seems to function more as maintaining the economic status quo.

I agree. It's current prestige comes mostly from the entire Bay Area rather than the actual city.

I like this answer, as each of those cities can be said to be the principle city of a sector or domain that is crucial to ensuring the USA's dominance. NYC(#1) and Chicago(#2) have a command over banking and finance; Boston, it's education; SF(technically the Bay Area), it's tech; LA got entertainment; Houston, it's oil/gas/energy; and DC of course is the the nation's capital and is where the federal laws are passed. But to narrow it further to satisfy the OP's question, it's DC or NYC.
