I didn't notice NYC included. Asheville's rank didn't surprise me. Santa Fe is pretty damn expensive.

Here is the methodology of the rankings according to US NEWS & WORLD:

Happiness Index – 22.7% (based on a Gallup index)

Housing Affordability Index – 20.2% (based on US Census data)

Health Care Quality Index – 18.1% (based on best hospital rankings)

Retiree Taxes Index – 14.6% (based on personal income tax and social security income tax)

Desirability Index – 13.5% (based on an online survey of people 45 and older)

Job Market Index – 10.9% (based ease of finding employment and earning potential)
