When you sat 200,000+, are you referring to the city proper or the metro population?
Also, what is considered "indoctrination/woke stuff" to you? I ask, because people have varying definitions when it comes to things like this.
This just told me the OP is conservative and wants to avoid liberal minded cities.
The reality is, there is very little of that "indoctrination and woke stuff" in public schools, except for in very certain/specific places.
I do understand the desire to avoid that, but the prevalence of it is way overblown and fed by ad hoc stories.
Most likely, that type of "education" can be avoided by removing extreme blue cities from the list. My kids didn't have any of that in their education in the purply/blue suburbs of Chicago. Most education on those topics is going to come from their peer group.
The biggest cities in NH might be worth a look. Possibly places in upstate NY.
If you consider Boise, it might be worth knowing they spend 1/3rd less on public schools than national average. Money isn't everything but most extras cost money.
Blacksburg VA by itself is below your minimum size but the broader region is much bigger. Could work.
Hi everyone! We are a family with kids looking for a place to live. We have spent hundreds of hours already on this forum reading many threads and see that people are giving valuable advices. We would love to hear this community opinion on the best place for us to settle. I would outline our criteria as follows:
1. Should be a city with 200,000+ population with good walkability and public transportation. Preferably it should have some places interesting for growing kids, like museums, science centers, etc.
2. There should be good school districts with focus on academics instead of things that don't belong in public schools (indoctrination, woke stuff, etc.).
3. Should be reasonably safe and drug-free.
4. We both work from home, so we are quite flexible in this respect.
5. Ideally the place should be in a geographical area with forests and/or mountains as hiking is a significant part of our lifestyle and we would like to be within a reasonable driving distance from places to hike.
Thank you in advance.
Move to Colorado Springs. It's your dreamland, by far. It's beyond wonderful for a dawn to dusk walk to the top of Pikes Peak and back. Hiking in the Garden of the Gods is wonderful, too. Later on, visit the Seven Falls. Good skiing is close by if into that.

200,000+ is for metro area. The number is driven mostly by the desire to have some life going on in cities, which is hard to find in my experience if you live in a smaller town.

Thank you for your suggestion! We love CO, it is a stunning state! But were concerned that marijuana is legal there.....
We plan to rent and then hopefully buy a place to live. Rent is probably no more than ~1700-1800 for a 2 bdr apt (this is what we pay now), and as for the apt/house to buy it is hard to say at the moment, probably around $400k-$500k for 1600-1700 sq ft place.

Thank you for this. Given this information, the post Kmanshouse made is spot on. This stuff is very easy to avoid and rare.
Also, the budget question that TheYO asked is important as well.
With that said, an area that comes to mind that is a little bit under the population criteria, but is next to a bigger metro area is Glens Falls NY: http://visit.cityofglensfalls.com/
The area transit system: https://gftransit.org/
I've only been to Glens Falls once, a long time ago, but my memory was that I liked it. As for the transit system, it's important to note not only the presence of bus service, but how frequently it operates. Smaller cities aren't going to have buses coming along every 5 minutes; but on the other hand, a service that operates only once an hour is hard to base your life around. Personally, I suggest that service that operates every 30 minutes is the minimum for making transit work as an integral part of your life. It looks like a few of the Glens Falls routes do operate every 30 minutes, so that's good. Wherever you (the OP) choose to live, try to make sure that the bus service between your house and the places you'd be going to the most (work, grocery store, doctor's office, wherever) operates at least every 30 minutes, at least during daytime hours.

I don't know of a city that has both of the criteria I bolded.
