Seattle, NYC, LA, Denver and Boston - Top 5. Next 110 included Phoenix, Portland, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis and Colorado Springs,
I think the political breakdown in there is pretty interesting. Austin being the most popular with self identified republicans is a bit surprising given it's reputation as being a liberal-progressive hub of Texas. Also NYC not appearing in the top 15 of Republicans is surprising to me. Though the sample sizes used for this study aren't particularly large and having Anchorage and Abbot, TX is a bit questionable. Seems, according to this, Seattle/Boston/Chicago/LA appeal to both sides.
Hmm, a friend of mine who actually lives in Queen Anne Seattle said that crime has exploded, their apartment building was just broken into, and they "miss the old Seattle". And then one of her friends chimed in and said he visited in 2018 and again in 2021, and there was a noticeable difference - not in a good way.
These are the types of people I listen to when I hear about how a city is doing.
Lists like this cater to the top 5% of the population and their high paying tech jobs.
ETA: Seattle probably still has a bunch of jobs, and people go there to work, but is it as desirable as it used to be once you get there? Seems not.
Chicago is a different animal altogether, way too complex to paint with one brush.
Downtown Seattle and its peripheral neighborhoods have been cleaned up a lot this year (thanks new mayor), including Lower Queen Anne, assuming we're talking homeless-related issues. I live nearby and walk through it pretty often. (Upper Queen Anne Hill is a richer area, and not terribly affected to begin with.)
It's pretty remarkable, actually. I walked 6.5 miles around greater Downtown on Sunday, and saw maybe 10 tents in total. I didn't hit the worst spots, but a similar walk last year would've found 50-100 I'd guess.
The Axios poll is probably reliant on reputation more than anything, and not necessarily full information. But I'll take it.
