This just in, Airports Council International released figures from 2007, and here are the busiest airports in America with the number of passengers in 2007 and the increase/decrease over 2006:
They finally started lifting all the caps that have driven Chicago's numbers down the past few years. I think once all the runways are rebuilt/expanded in the next few years the traffic should get back to normal.
Of course that's if the airline industry doesn't collapse cause of fuel prices and all the airlines go bankrupty, jeesh.

Actually I see good days ahead for O'Hare also, and a partial decline in Midways traffic.

And the EL was down for a while so I bet that hurt them. Not a huge amount but a some. I'd like to see O'Hare at number one again but

I've heard good things about Midway's traffic recently.
Memphis & Indy are on there because of Fedex Corp.
Louisville because of UPS Corp.
It's fascinating to see the Memphis airport at night. It's like a war zone. A couple hundred FedEx planes all land within an hour or so, unload, reload, then they all take off within another hour or so.
Right now Memphis is the busiest cargo airport on the planet, but Hong Kong will probably surpass it in the next year or two.
