Nice to see a (2023) report that focuses on us Gen-Xers instead of the usual Boomer or Millennial reports. SmartAsset examined data from the U.S. Census Bureau for 268 of the largest U.S. cities to identify and rank where Gen Xers (aged 45 to 54) are moving to. I'm a Gen Xer, so nice to see my new city getting some love.

Cities are ranked by the rate at which people aged 45-54 who moved in in 2022, as a percentage of the total population.

1 Surprise, Arizona 2.89% 4,414 11.93%
2 Bend, Oregon 2.79% 2,858 14.60%
3 Scottsdale, Arizona 2.58% 6,215 13.68%
4 Orlando, Florida 2.53% 7,923 12.82%
5 Fort Lauderdale, FL 2.48% 4,507 14.20%
6 St. George, Utah 2.48% 2,499 10.19%
7 Jackson, Mississippi 2.46% 3,551 11.67%
8 Wichita Falls, Texas 2.14% 2,187 10.56%
9 Hartford, Connecticut 2.12% 2,527 12.11%
10 Hialeah, Florida 2.09% 4,569 15.96%
11 Vacaville, California 2.08% 2,093 9.07%
12 Henderson, Nevada 2.04% 6,699 13.41%
13 Colorado Springs, CO 1.97% 9,456 11.87%
14 Arlington, Virginia 1.93% 4,458 12.85%
15 Billings, Montana 1.90% 2,256 11.05%
16 Las Vegas, Nevada 1.88% 12,175 12.78%
17 Green Bay, Wisconsin 1.85% 1,947 12.36%
18 Roseville, California 1.85% 2,841 13.59%
19 North Las Vegas, NV 1.83% 5,078 12.43%
20 Enterprise, Nevada 1.82% 4,158 13.92%

I wish they'd do these with MSA instead of city boundaries, which are rather arbitrary in many US cities.

Surprise and Scottsdale... really, Phoenix. Though I wonder what would happen to the rank if the entire MSA population is the denominator.

Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Enterprise, Henderson... aka Las Vegas.

Lol, if you wonder why we Generation Xers are being ignored compared to Baby Boomers and the Millennials, look at your age range. I remember when Generation X went to 1985 (1965-1985) for 20 years. Then it was shortened to 1965-1980 and 15 years. Now you got someone who has it down to 10 years!!!

Anyway, from your list, who is moving to Jackson Mississippi? Or Hartford Connecticut? Locals might but I cannot see someone going across country to move to Jackson. Unless this is for metro area, Hartford for example has nice suburbs.

Feel free to dig up a report that breaks it down down by MSA.

I get it's ridiculous, but I didn't pick that age range.

It was never 1985. 1984 was the latest I think I ever saw when the millennial generation was being identified, but 1980-1981 was quickly used as the cutoff, so the earliest millennials could all have reached adulthood with the millennium. Gen X was the Slacker Generation, and basically in their 20's for most of the '90s. It used to be 1965 as a start date though, so it's been shortened here on the top end.

GenX has always started at 1965 (the end of the Boomers is 1964).

The end of GenX has had some leeway - with it at first being 1979, but it has consistently been 1980 for a while now. (Never 1982 or anything after.)

Interesting.

I've been to all of those cities.

The ones I find surprising are St. George, Jackson, and Wichita Falls.
