None. America is too large of a country with too many different cultures for one geographic area to capture all.

This is true, but its asks which "Best" embodies America, not which does embody America

Illinois. Its demographics are pretty close to the nation at large... and has a variety of urban, suburban, rural.

What America USED to be? Id vote for somewhere like Vermont. Quaint, quiet, clean, neighborly, safe.

What state best embodies the USA currently? California, sadly... loud, partyland, unsafe, dirty, full of crime, and the place where people care more about their iPods, who Lindsay Lohan's new lesbo/straight/bi/trans/whatever lover of the week is, and what new flavor is at Starbucks, than what is IMPORTANT in life. Keepin' up with the Joneses at its worst...

Talk about some exaggerated and false BS stereotypes you got going there. Maybe if you put down the US Weekly you'd realize the vast majority of Californians don't care what Lindsay Lohan is doing, what new model of the ipod is selling, etc.... anymore than people in Illinois or the rest of the country. You've never even lived here yet somehow think you know what life is like and what Californians consider important, its just absolutely amazing what strong off base feelings some people have towards a state they've never lived in. Some of you guys spend a little too much time obsessing over what the media feeds to you.

I agree with those who believe California best embodies what America is today.
California is a microcosim of American society and for so many years it also embodied the American Dream.
I would not argue that today's California embodies that same dream but it does best represent where we are and what we have become here in the USA.
In addition to many of the reasons listed below, I would also add that the issue of Immigration is certainly an important issue in America today and again, California is best representative of the impact and on going debate over Immigration.

CA has some of the wealthiest parts of the country as well as some of the poorest; there are pockets of poverty here just as bad as anything you'd find in Appalachia or the rural South, if not worse. CA has some of the largest metro areas and a high % of people living in urban areas but at the same time is the #1 agricultural state. We have really liberal areas and really conservative areas too, it's not as liberal and democratic as some might assume. We have some of the safest cities as well as some of the most dangerous. It's just one big, dirty diverse state. Lots of good things here but also lots of bad things, hopefully other places will learn from CA's mistakes, which there are many, rather than repeat them.

I agree with whoever said Ohio. You could substitute at least 20 other states that are very similar.

California, New York, Texas and Florida are all unique outliers and are not representative of the rest of the country.

Some states are wealthy while others are mostly poor

So in your opinion which state best embodies all of these characteristics of America?

I would have to say NJ. Everything that is good and bad about America can be found there. From top to bottom America is represented fully in the Garden State.

Note: If this is a repeat thread then moderator please delete. I searched and couldn't find anything similar.
New Jersey seems a pretty good guess. Also:
Ohio
Maryland
Missouri
Kentucky
North Carolina

Actually most states have at least some of the attributes you listed above and I cannot pin it down lol.
