There are college Towns like Amherst, MA or State College, PA which are basically students and Staff of a University dominates all aspects of life.
What bigger cities that have industries outside of Colleges are most like College Towns.
Syracuse and Columbus come to mind.

Tucson, AZ and New Haven, CT. Two cities that are worlds apart yet fall into that same category of college town/medium sized city.

Boston. I know that there is so much more than universities to the city but the number, (and student population) scope and reputation of colleges there definitely have an effect on bringing a college culture to many parts of the city.

I'd probably go with DC and Portland. DC because it is home to TONS of private colleges (Georgetown, American, George Mason, George Washington, Howard, etc) and Portland because the general vibe of the city is fairly reminiscent of a typical college town.

Yup. Something like 200,000 students go to school in Boston or the immediate suburbs (Cambridge, Newton, etc). The city is noticeably less crowded during the summer.

In Canada, of the major cities Montreal feels the most "college town" like given that it has 4 universities and McGill attracts a large number of students from the US who go there for the city's "party" atmosphere.

Of smaller Canadian cities, there are no "pure" college towns (that's more of a US town), but places with a college town feel include Halifax, NS; Kingston, ON; and Victoria, BC.
