My husband and I both do remote work (IT) and can work from anywhere in the country. We have small children and a combined income of around $120k a year. In most situations we would like to spend $180k to $210k on a home.

Here's what we require:

- within 40 miles of a city with a good hospital and ethnic food options.
- very safe area. not just the neighborhood but all the surrounding areas should be safe. Low murder rates.
- Decent public schools.
- Walking distance to a park or greenbelt.

Here's what we'd like:
- bike friendly area
- very close to a safe downtown even if its just a small town downtown.
- Asian food. (I'm half vietnamese and half filipino.)
- yards with privacy
- warm weather
- scenery
- near pro sports team
- by college or university
- not a dry county

Several of my preferences are similar to yours, so I will be watching this thread with interest. Meanwhile, what comes to mind for you is my own current top choice (and somewhere I have lived before): the suburbs of Portland, OR. Each suburb has its own personality but most of them are safe (some extremely so), scenic, have parks, have small safe downtowns, are bike friendly, are not dry, have yards. Some have very highly-regarded public schools. Some have their own Asian food options, and in any case you can go to Portland for restaurants, as well as for pro sports (though it's only NBA and pro soccer, and WHL hockey). There are also colleges/universities and multiple hospitals in the area. The downsides for you would likely be price (in your price range you'd be looking at condos), weather, and possibly not as many pro sports as you'd want.

Where are these homes you speak of in the Portland area that are only $200k?? I like the area but I'm not sure it qualifies.

The Gulf Coast. Large Vietnamese population. I ate some really good food living down there.

Some of the outer suburbs of Atlanta might work also. 210K will get you a nice 3BR .

Atlanta is not what I'd consider safe. Look at the murder rate. Which safe downtown are these nice $210k homes close to?

Nothing, unless you adjust your criteria.

Athens, GA but the cost of housing will be higher depending on house size.
