I think Mass epitomizes New England the best because it has everything New England is known for- something of a microcosim (sp?). the ocean (classic resort beach towns and rocky shored fishing towns); ancient wooded mountains; typical New England towns with commons and white steeples along with medium-sized mill cities. Farms, cities, wilderness, the sea- it's all represented well.
It is in southern New England but the most central of the 6 states. It is also the most populated and has the un-official capital of New England- Boston.
I realize no 1 state can represent New England but Massachusetts is the closest IMO.
