According to Google Earth (which calls the Great Lakes the Third Coast), Michigan has more "coastline" (their word), than any state except Alaska. I don't really care that much about this thread, but sometimes some comments beg for a response.
I vote for the Great Lakes. Numerous businesses here in Milwaukee use "third coast" or "north coast" in there names. Cities like Cleveland, Buffalo, Milwaukee, and Chicago have beaches, marinas, shipping ports, and even a commercial fishing industry, all things that come along with having a "coast." The Gulf of Mexico otoh is part of the Atlantic Ocean, which basically just makes it an extension of the East Coast.
Definently the gulf coast. It's more of a coast by what i think of when i think coast. Plus 'coast' sounds strange to apply to a lake imo.
The original name for the Great Lakes was the Sweetwater Seas. The only reason the Great Lakes are referred to as "lakes" is because they contain freshwater. It should be noted that the Great Lakes contain nearly 20% of the earth's entire supply of freshwater. Saying the Great Lakes are just lakes is like saying the Grand Canyon is just a hole in the ground.
That is most interesting. Do the Missouri and Mississippi river flow in/out of them? I think they do but my geopraphy is off right now.
The only connection between the great lakes and the Mississippi river is the Chicago river canal/locks. Just ask the asian carp, theyll show you the connection. (yea sarcasm) THe great lakes drain to the east via the St Laurance seaway.

You're mistaken, neither river flows into or out of Michigan. However, the state of Michigan touches 4 of the 5 Great Lakes and is comprised of 2 peninsulas.
