I may be moving to Albany for a job soon, and would be looking to rent a small, one bedroom home or maybe a nice trailer, with a fenced-in yard for a dog. What are the safest streets or neighborhoods in Albany where I could probably rent such a dwelling, with a budget of $500-$700 per month, plus utilities?

Also, while I know crime can happen anywhere at any time, what are some streets or areas of town I should generally avoid?

Lastly, what are some good, local restaurants and live-music venues? What other entertainment options are in or near Albany?

GaCajun, were I you, I would contact a realtor in Albany. Albany has so changed over the past 30 years since I lived near there. There are a few exciting projects recently announced for the city, however. I imagine that if they come to fruition, Albany will once again experience fundamental changes. I have family in Albany and they really like it there. Best of luck in your search!

I'd look more at the west side of Albany. Downtown and East Albany are absolute crap.

Yes, this. Especially around Dawson Rd and Albany Mall, there are some really nice homes and neighborhoods.

That's the area I know best, currently... looks quite nice driving through that area.

East Albany or the Southside. Honestly and I love Albany but the whole city except maybe around the mall area or West Albany.
