I'm curious about the town of Ocilla, GA. What are the homes like? Are they older homes or new subdivisions? Is it a relatively safe place to live? What does Ocilla have to offer in regards to restaurants etc.

My dad's family is from there and he still has some hunting land in Mystic that I go over to a lot. The homes are mostly older, any new homes are built by owner. The only subdivisions within 10 miles of Ocilla are the kind when someone's parent dies and the land is split between siblings. Yes, it's safe. I've eaten at every restaurant in Ocilla and the only one I wouldn't go back to is the Chinese place, the other 4 are pretty good, but basically all the same kind of meat and sides places, besides the Mexican place. There's a pretty cool coffee shop right in town too and a decent BBQ place halfway towards Douglas.

Fitzgerald and Tifton have a little more variety in the culinary scene and Ocilla isn't far from either.

If you want to move to a little farm town and buy a beautiful century home for under 200k that doesn't need too much work, then it's as good a place as any other.

It's funny you mentioned old homes; I found an incredible older home (almost 100 years old) that is absolutely gorgeous for $159,900, Beautifully restored and in great shape in Ocilla. I live in northern Vermont (20 minutes from the Canadian border) and will plan on moving south in 5 years when my youngest graduates high school. (I'm aware that that particular home will probably be sold already but if I get the opportunity to sell my home here, I'd buy that home in a minute and just rent here until we move.) Anyway, the town I live in has about 1000 people, very rural. We like quiet and country; I just HATE the winters up here. Having 6+ months of cold, snow, and grey dreary days has worn me down and I battle depression every winter until summer hits in June. I need some sun!

Is there the typical box stores in the area? We just 1.5 years ago got a Walmart. The closet Lowes/Home depot/ etc is an hour away in NH. It'd be nice if they were just a bit closer.

There's a Fred's in Ocilla which is like a mini Walmart. There are Super Walmarts every 20 minutes in Southeast Georgia. There's either a Lowe's or a HD in Tifton, but I'd be remiss to my family ties in not mentioning the True Value hardware store in Douglas which is very well run by the owner, a distant cousin of mine.

If you're ever serious about moving down there, go stay a weekend at the Dorminy Massee House, a wonderful bed and breakfast in Fitzgerald and explore the area.

Though a lot can change in 5 years, this may all be out of date by then.

Travelled thru Ocilla and enjoyed eating at The CatFish House and Chicken Delite.
