Although people commonly believe that the world is more evolved, civilized, and less violent/primitive than it was in the past this is a total myth. All that has changed today is the methods of human control, not the fact that is happening.
Humans are still under the same brutal and corrupt control that they have been for centuries, thousands of years in fact. The fact of humanity is that in any population of humans evil ones will always exist who will seek to exert control over other humans at any costs necessary.
Additionally, some of these evil individuals will also be born with far superior genetic abilities to the average human, primarily exceptional intelligence, which gives them the ability to impose themselves successfully upon their fellow man.
That people think this somehow does not still apply to the world is of course totally false. All the kinds of things that ever used to happen in the past still happen today- Murder, torture, secret plots, assassinations, false imprisonment, overthrows of enemy nations, slavery, brutal executions, mass murder of innocent people, sex slavery, etc.
It is all simply concealed from the average person to create the illusion that it isn't happening anymore although nothing has changed at all. If you think about it makes total sense.
To think that for some reason in the modern age human nature and behavior has suddenly ceased to apply is a false notion. People look back in history and marvel at the supposed brutality and inhumanity of the past but they fail to realize that nothing at all has changed.
It is still the same as it has ever been. A small group of men controlling a much larger group of men through subtle manipulation and control.
Although still far from perfect, life today is thousand times better than in the past: it is safer, healthier, longer, richer, more comfortable and pleasurable. Society is better organized in most places.
I have no idea to what exactly the OP is referring, but there were lawless times in many countries. With large no-men lands, your life was in a constant danger, especially when travelling. Gangs and bandits swarmed the land and did as they pleased without anyone stopping them.
In case of natural disasters, there was no relief. The list goes on and on.
However, we have to remember that there are still third world countries, where there is little respect for the law and for human live.
Like another poster asked, what are we debating? If you're saying actual acts of violence and depravity relative to population are the same as in the past I have to say you're wrong. I've read at least one study that illustrated that the present day has some of the least number of violent deaths from organized conflicts worldwide in the past 2000 (yes 2000!) years. Sure there are and always will be evil, brutal people but society as a whole is less tolerant of this kind of behavior than in the past. Ex. there isn't any major society on Earth where gladiators fighting each other or animals to the death is condoned.
It will always be a situation of the haves and have nots. Those who have a economic advantage can afford to live a life of relative safety and leisurely pursuits. The rich can seek higher education, top health care and never go hungry.
America for the most part provides much of this compared to the undeveloped world.
The biggest troubles come about when the have nots want what the well off people have and they attempt to take it.
A great majority of the world has been lifted up to a better level and the world is a far less brutal place because of this evolution. However there will always be fighting and struggle to get more.
Although still far from perfect, life today is thousand times better than in the past: it is safer, healther, longer, richer, more comfortable and pleasurable. Society is better organized in most places.
We have got lazier, fatter we kill for sport & not food. People are killed for the shoes they are wearing or the colors they have on. How safe are we when one can push a button & end all life as we know it? Does being rich equate to being happy? Even the very poor can find pleasure. Healthier? Even with all the crap being pumped into the air & into our foods? Everyone seems to be offended by every little fart you make.
