The other day I was thinking about what life would be like these days if Twitter had not been invented. I'm not talking about all social media, just specifically Twitter. We would still have email, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.
I realized that Twitter has become so embedded into our lives that it is difficult to imagine how various high-profile events would be responded to, or even known about, without Twitter. Twitter seems to cause what would have been isolated events in the pre-Twitter era (and thus, reported on only in the local media) into events that quickly attract international attention.
I was trying to envision the current presidential election process without Twitter, and found it hard to even imagine what that would look like. It made me realize that Twitter is having a huge effect on everything from politics, to social issues, to international issues. Even though I don't even use Twitter personally, I feel that I am being affected by its use by so many others.
Twitter means that anyone can say just about anything (I think they do censor some content), and a few words or a picture can spread around the world in minutes - is this tool having a beneficial effect on the problems in our world, or a detrimental one?
Social media posts live forever. Why would anyone post on twitter, Facebook, instagram, vine, youtube, etc, etc anything they wouldn't want their future boss or children to read? Any post could be a powder keg of trouble in the future. I see very little positive with social media.

Social media is neither good nor evil. It is benign but can be used for good or bad. There's no doubt it is fueling politically extremism and the decline of political moderates.

Personally, I tried Twitter for about a month and thought it utterly stupid. To me it was all about trying to get as many followers as possible, posting fake photos of yourself, and trolling non-stop. So I cancelled my account and have not been back to Twitter.

If an event is "high-profile" it obviously doesn't need Twitter to become known. You are contradicting yourself here.

Twitter runs a very narrow gamut that goes from individual mouthing off to mob.

Speak for yourself i don't have a twitter account and i have no desire to and millions and millions of people are the same way. I have a facebook account but i go on for about 15 minutes every few days. Not everyone is a sheep of society that just follows what others do.
Believe it or not millions of people have no desire to waste time online with silly things like twitter, facebook or whatever else, they are out living life while you are living life on a phone.
