I have a more interesting question. How would the 99% survive without the 1%? Fairly well I would think. Another is what good would it be to be the 1% when there was no 99% to consider yourself better, prettier, more privileged than or exclusive from? Exclusivity is useless if you can't use it to feel better than the 99%.
Well if the 1% are paying half of all income taxes... the other 99% benefit greatly, especially the lower percentages, who aren't paying ****. Imagine if you took out the 1% and doubled income tax for everyone else, there would be uproar.

They pay 38% of the income tax, and the only reason they pay that much is because they have all the income!
If we took the 1% out we'd be way better off! Their effective income tax rate is only 22%, so that is 78% we wouldn't "lose". Potentially.
If you get rid of the innovators the economy will suffer. Get rid of the rentiers and the economy prospers. The useless elites exist only because government protects them. If they were all eliminated more of the poor could rise up and fill the need for goods and services. The total poor population could be drastically reduced simply by destroying every single protected elite rentier.

Let me understand what you are trying to say: It is the 1% that prevents the poor from improving their lot in life. If you actually believe that you must be one of the poor. I would strongly recommend you go to school and get a skill set that will pay more than the minimum wage. Fact is, the rich aren't holding the poor down! There are no shortage of success stories-including myself. Anyone who believes the rich negatively impact their future is not being honest with themselves and should take time to reflect on what they have to offer society.
If you actually believe that you must be one of the poor.
I think it's more likely he understands economics better than you.
Most of the really wealthy do not provide any beneficial function to society. Often what they do is harmful. They are simply successful at gaming a system that allows people to become insanely wealthy. They extract wealth from the productive economy, which means that it actually comes out of our pockets.

The portion of your post I put in bold font describes Goldman Sachs perfectly.

Yep, finance is big one, way beyond the benefit it provides.
