Well would you?

If someone broke into your home and had a gun and there was NO doubt that they were going to kill your family, would you take their life? Or walking down a street & someone pulled a gun on you & yours. Would you fight for your own life?

I ask this because I see so many here who are against the death penalty and who are pro-life. I have to wonder if they would just stand by and let their family be killed or defend them. I'm not tying to be a troll I just have to wonder at what point they believe that taking a life is okay.

This is a simple answer for me.

Yes.

To protect my family and myself, you bet I would. Kill or be killed, not much choice

I am pro-life, but I am also for the death penalty. In fact, I wish it was used a lot more. I wish all the people who were sentenced to death actually got their sentence carried out. Would I shoot someone to defend myself and my family. OF course. And I have the means to do it.

There is no reason to not protect my family.

I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty, and I would not hesitate to put a .45 ACP in the face of someone threatening the life of my family. There's a difference between self-defense and killing a criminal after the fact, when there is no danger - and I'm incredulous that anyone would really need to have that difference explained to them.

I think everyone is capable of it, in the right circumstances.

When I was in a situation and was jumped, I was astounded at how the adrenaline kicked in.

It's not me at all and hate violence but to protect a loved one without a second thought

It's a huge thing obviously and this is one of the main reasons I've got huge respect for soldiers for example, and having to deal with this on a day to day basis ( during war/conflict ).

There are others but these spring to mind

Under those circumstances, without question or hesitation.

I would take someone's life in a moment if it meant protecting me, my family, or certain potential victims of that perpetrator in that moment.

In an unrelated matter, I am 100% for the death penalty and get sick of seeing people who really need to go stick around and continue to torment others and cost the taxpayers money.

I would kill if I am being immediately threatened for my life, if my only options were kill or be killed. If I had a third option - escape (by removing myself from the situation or disabling my opponent with certainty that it would work), I would pick escape. In the case of the death penalty, there is no immediate threat, therefore no reason to kill. I find killing inmates is quite cold blooded... at the same time, I do not feel that I should be obligated to make their life comfortable with my tax money... I am certain there are cheaper and more humane alternatives than the current system.

Whatever the ethical rules are made, I think it's important to consider "would I be ok with these rules if at any moment in time I was placed into the consciousness of that other person?" - I would not be ok being executed if I suddenly found myself a convicted murderer. I would want to have the option for humane suicide though. And ideally, a way to work for a living (albeit incarcerated living) and be able to contribute to society.
