How have we as a society managed to produce educated people who are scared of vaccines and GMO food with no scientific basis for that fear but have no problem lighting up something with well documented risks and sharing that second hand with their kids?
Having a college degree does not really make anyone more intelligent. What are their degrees in?

They are scared of getting cancer and disease from tainted food but they still smoke? That is like someone in PETA abstaining from meat but still wearing fur.

GMO foods are not bad per say, but they are modified to withstand chemicals, so they are doused with weed and bug killer - that is bad for you. Science in other developed countries knows this, but here in the USA Money Talks.

VAERS and NVICP are two completely different entities, it's like night and day. And if the science is so cut and dried and indisputable:

Why does every first-world country have a different vaccine schedule?
Why do different U.S. states have different vaccine schedules?
Why are some countries SUING the vaccine manufacturer (check out what Japan is doing)?
Why have some countries outright BANNED GMOs?

As the above poster states, if you eat GMOs you are eating insectcide-laced produce. Explain how that is a healthy and educated thing to be doing, because I sure can't.

That's just a naturalistic fallacy.

The story with the HPV vaccine in Japan is particularly troubling. This is a vaccine that PREVENTS CANCER. It was removed from the recommendation list for no substantial reason. And their health ministry is attempting to put it back on the recommended list but is being fought by pure propaganda and fear mongering, not science.

Although there is no scientific evidence to suggest a causal link, the vaccination rate has fallen to close to zero since the government withdrew its recommendation.

Actually that's totally backwards.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a naturally occurring bacterium in the soil that produces proteins specifically active against certain insects. Some crops such as corn, cotton, and soybeans have been genetically engineered to express the Bt genes that act as insecticides (see this article). Bt corn is designed to control corn pests such as the European corn borer, corn earworm, and southwestern corn borer, and Bt cotton effectively controls cotton pests such as the tobacco budworm, cotton bollworm, and pink bollworm [7]. The use of Bt crops has led to a reduction in conventional synthetic insecticide use [8] (Figure 2). The EPA has analyzed Bt crops and found that they do not pose any significant risks to human health [7]. Specifically, the EPA has done studies showing that the Bt protein in GM plants behaves as would be expected for a dietary protein, is not structurally related to a known food allergen or protein toxin, and does not show toxicity when administered orally at high doses [7].

It does NOT prevent cancer. There is no study that concludes: "This vaccine prevents cancer." It is a lie perpetuated by the media/marketing. There has been no follow-up -- something that is crucial to prove the success of ANY drug -- that proves it prevents cancer.

The vaccine, however, may/may not prevent one of the four HPV stains that could cause cervical cancer.

Do you know how many women have HPV? 85% to 95% depending on which stats you find. It's harmless. Everyone has it at one time or another.
Do you know how many women die from cervical cancer in the U.S. each year? About 4,000. How many of those cases are caused by the HPV strains that the vaccine targets? Anyone know? Anyone?

That's 4,000 out 150,000,000, which is a 0.00002% LIFETIME risk of dying from cervical cancer. It is absurdly low. There is no reason for this vaccine, and the fact that the manufacturer is marketing it to boys is criminal.

A 0.00002% lifetime risk of dying from cervical cancer.

I've noticed you chose one article published in a mainstream newspaper that is published in the United States. Why don't you search for some articles published in Japan? Something written by Japanese scientists? Or check into other countries where there has been a backlash against the vaccine? What about looking at sheer numbers of adverse events? Stories from families where the girls were injured from the vaccine? Any documentaries about the vaccine?

Again, research, investigate and LEARN. One article in a country that is biased in favor of the product proves -- nothing.

Yes, please consult actual peer reviewed studies on the subject. Reading the tabloids of another country does not count as research.

People accept what the people they associate with accept, regardless of facts. People who associate with Christians will be Christians, people who associate with Muslims will be Muslim, and people who go fishing will be Blue Domers. They are preyed on by fund raisers who want to get their hands in their pockets, and those fund raisers promote their causes. Often the fund raisers will produce very slick propaganda. The bias is not immediately apparent to the innocent. It takes a lot of intellectual effort to come to grips with reality, and many people just don't have the time.

Sometimes the beliefs can be relatively harmless, like believing that people go live in the sky after they die. Sometimes the beliefs can be actively harmful, like the "essential oil" craze and natural medicine. I actually had people tell me that honey and cinnamon is a great cure-all nostrum, when cassia cinnamon (the most common type) is highly poisonous in any but tiny quantities. I have had otherwise intelligent people inform me of the most astonishing facts:

- "natural" immunity from getting a disease is better than vaccinated immunity.
- Moses was a real person
- Logging causes deforestation
- Crystals focus psychic energy

The list is endless, and new things pop up all the time.

Both VAERS and NVICP are part of the NVICA (National Vaccine Injury Compensation Act).

Most first world vaccine schedules are very similar. Some differences are due to different populations and disease burdens. Some use vaccines we don't use, e.g. Men B for small children, Japanese encephalitis, BCG for some groups.

All US states follow the CDC recommendations. States have varying vaccine mandates for school attendance.

A class action suit is being filed in Japan against Merck for claims of adverse reactions to the HPV vaccine. The plaintiffs are girls/women who claim these adverse effects. Japan is not suing anyone despite what you might read on "alternative" health websites. In fact, the plaintiffs are suing the Japanese government as well as Merck.

I have not been following the GMO story that closely.

Did you even read the article or just dismiss it because it came from some US source? It includes a link to Japan's Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology where they say this:
Quote:
As HPV vaccine use in combination with cervical cancer screening including Pap test is indispensable for the prevention of cervical cancer, recommendations for HPV vaccination must be resumed.

As a reminder, the opening post was about the reliance on pseudoscience, not vaccines or GMO. Both of which are divisive enough topics to warrant their own threads(and should be of people wish to debate them).
