If you where alive back then, then your'e pretty much a Baby Boomer or older. I was a child growing up through the 60's and as such experienced it's wonderments without experiencing some of it's drawbacks.

How are the children of Gen X and Y different?

Did the "Peace And Love" generation come down off the mountain and get jobs as Lawyers and High School Principals...? What dichotomy exists if so?

Progress: Racial equality improved I think...Barack Obama being elected President a good example.

Vegetarianism: Didn't fare so well, look at all the shows on cable from traveling all the rib joints of the U.S....extreme pig outs, even public television has Barbeque University an a host of other cooking shows all searing, grilling, stewing meat like there was no tomorrow. Some of it is "organic" though...LOL

Any thoughts, examples, predictions.....?

Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, Tell me, where are you going?
This he told me

Said, I'm going down to Yasgur's Farm,
Gonna join in a rock and roll band.
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Well, then can I roam beside you?
I have come to lose the smog,
And I feel myself a cog in somethin' turning.
And maybe it's the time of year,
Yes and maybe it's the time of man.
And I don't know who I am,
But life is for learning.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are caught in the devils bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Joni Mitchell.

O.K...you posted it ovcatto, now you have to do your best to reduce your "Carbon Footprint" including hybrid vehicles....LOL....

Yes Texdav...many went on to be entrepreneurs. Where the sons and daughters of the well to do more able to have the free time to be Hippies over others who had more obligation and less time? If so, where they more able to pick up where they left off afterwards and pursue wealthier lifestyle.
Did they act as unwitting "Pied Pipers" leading those who could far less afford the lost time, ramifications and aftermath of the lifestyle...?

Not really. There were many that went to vietnam and still went on top successful careersa and many foru years of college. I thnik people for get that life is full of lesson that in many insatnces actaully don't interfer with success. You have to remmebr that the vast majority were in their early 20's. Some no doubt that got hooked on drugs went downhill and other never really changed ;just moved on. I have many friends and they just say life is a learning experience and it just delayed waht was bound to happen anyway. All are now in thier late 50's and early 60's and most are successful and have families. funny thing is all are basically not interested at all in politcs. For me the service and college set my course as By the time I got back to civilian life the movemnt had pretty much became a politcal movement that did not interest me.

Yeah not to mention all the mind alterations we still partake in so freely.

I probably didn't quote you quite right.

Woodstock 1999 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Many large bonfires were burning high before the band left the stage for the last time. Participants danced in circles around the fires. Looking for more fuel, some tore off panels of plywood from the supposedly inviolable security perimeter fence. ATMs were tipped over and broken into, trailers full of merchandise and equipment were forced open and burglarized, and abandoned vendor booths were turned over, and set afire.[15]

MTV, which had been providing live coverage, removed its entire crew. MTV host Kurt Loder described the scene in the July 27, 1999 issue of USA Today:

"It was dangerous to be around. The whole scene was scary. There were just waves of hatred bouncing around the place, (...) It was clear we had to get out of there.... It was like a concentration camp. To get in, you get frisked to make sure you're not bringing in any water or food that would prevent you from buying from their outrageously priced booths. You wallow around in garbage and human waste. There was a palpable mood of anger."[16]
After some time, a large force of New York State Troopers, local police, and various other law enforcement arrived. Most had crowd control gear and proceeded to form a riot-line that flushed the crowd to the northwest, away from the stage located at the eastern end of the airfield. Few of the crowd offered strong resistance and they dispersed quickly back toward the campground and out the main entrance

Sorry dude. I'm a Gen X'er and I really don't relate to woodstock at all. While I think the race issue is better overall there still alot of work to be done. Just electing a black man to be president doesn't mean we solved all the issues. As for war and peace. Well all you have to do is look around and what we have done as a nation for the past 8 years and know that the whole peace movement didn't work out that well. Heck while I was not a fan of the Iraq war from the begining. I have to say I didn't have any problems with our looking for blood in afganistan for 9/11. Hell I wouldn't have a problem if our goverment dropped a 100-megaton nuclear warhead on the Afganistan/Pakistan border. Yeah I know, it will never happen. But if you want me to be honest. I really don't care if those two countries were wipe from the map.
As for vegetarianism. Again sorry dude. I like meat and don't enjoy the texture or taste of most vegetables. So I'm not going to be a convert.
As for the music of woodstock. It was good music. But again I really just don't feel that music is my seen. I'm more of a Slayer, pantara, biohazard, and Danzig type guy. I like loud aggressive moshpit type of music. That’s just me though.

As for predictions. I think race relations will get better over time. I also think the large influx of the Latino population will change the overall meaning of what it is to be an American. Whether this will be good or bad is anybody’s guess at this point. As for standard of living or Gen X and Y. I personally think it will be lower. Not third world status or anything but less consumerism overall. While I can't guess on what most Gen X'er and Gen Y'er politicians are going to be like. I don't believe they will be of the same mindset. But I will be interested to see which way the country goes when my generation and the Y'ers get handed power.

I don't think Woodstock has much or anything to do with improved civil rights. Most of that movement was by blacks and whites in formal clothes who had jobs or were even "gasp" active in their church. Although possibly the casual attitude of Woodstock did play a role in interracial relationships becoming more accepted.

The main legacy of Woodstock is drugs and illegitimate children who became bitter. (And oddly enough disproportionately Republican) Although I'll concede a few positives. For example concern for the environment, the popularity of more comfortable clothing (if you want to wear ties you can, but you don't have to), and a greater criticism of commercialism or consumerism. Also some of the music, the main point as it was a concert, was actually pretty good.

I think the main thing we should learn from it though is to see how many who played then died of drugs and try to avoid linking music so closely to addiction. Or at the very least to avoid the "hard stuff" like heroin, cocaine, and meth.

Baby Boomers have desstroyed this country and Woodstock was their emblematic statement. The ideals of woodstock have failed as the baby boomers have failed.

I think your post is predicated on, for example, vegetarianism is of some value/worth. Also, I don't think of Woodstock and racial equality being cause and effect. I don't remember a stoned Dr Martin Luther King Jr, listening to bands and rolling around in the mud.

P.S. In 1969, I was a Young Republican.

Do you have the time to watch the South Park episode, "Die Hippie, Die" online? (about 22 minutes) It's pretty funny. It's on the show's website.
