According to the Washington Post. Stats are for ages 17-24.

Main reasons are:

-Too fat/out of shape (30%)
-No High School diploma (25%)
-Various physical ailments (asthma, poor eyesight, hearing problems, etc.)

Shame on you parents if you raised one of these idiot butterballs! If the Greatest Generation was like this we would have lost WW2! The highest technology is all we have now militarily. It would be our only chance against the other powers from China to Turkey!

Ironically, much of those 75% are probably tattooed, gun-loving self-proclaimed bad-asses... who aren't even smart or fit enough to be molded into useful soldiers! Pathetic

They can always lower their standards the way they did during the Vietnam draft years. You'd get scooped up by the draft board once your grades dropped below a certain level. College kids were not only not preferred, but often exempt.

If your eyesight is poor, that can be adjusted for. Medical disqualifiers are generally something you personally have no control over, it's a roll of the dice.

The education requirements--or lack of a criminal record--are controllable. Yet they have waivered people with criminal records before. Especially now that they need people.

And why don't these kids feel motivated? It takes adults to stand up and motivate them. Unfortunately, there's few people these days who are adults and act like it. The kids are simple emulating what they see everyday.

As far as the health problems such as asthma and poor eyesight, I've had asthma since I was a baby and have some other ailments I was born with...not really my fault, or my parent's. Stuff happens. I say it's time to lower the standards a bit. How 'bout this: As long as you've got a brain and good mobility, you're in.

Being fat or out of shape is something that you do have control over.A lifetime spent stuffing yourself at the nearest fast food restarant, never walking anywhere, let alone running or vigorous exercise, and spending all of your free time like a zombie in front of a terminal playing video games, surely can be avoided by good parenting and self disipline and motivation.

Hmmm, I remember when a lot of those 'criminal minded, tattooed, self proclaimed bad asses', would get into trouble with the law, and a judge could say "OK boy, you got your choice, prison or the Marine Corps". Many of them came back from their hitch completely changed, for the better. The 'high standard' thing is silly ,IMHO.Many a ...troubled, lad (or lass, these days) would benefit from the ...wisdom... of a hard core DI and a good dose of reality, military style. The old days of two years obligated service was not such a bad thing either.

We don't really need such a large active military force anyway. With the leaps in technology that we do have, we can do a lot with less manpower and less American lives lost. Hopefully it doesn't come to that again anytime soon.

Over weight is listed as 27%.

If they have a GED they can (maybe) receive a waiver providing they score well enough on the test to get in and they don't. Recent high school grads don't seem to fair to well. At some point, we should have discussions of how standardized testing is the PROBLEM not the answer.

Criminality. If someone doesn't start paying attention to the school to prison pipeline and cops in schools and zero tolerance, I think I might just have a meltdown.

32% have issues that are not weight related. Including recent ADHD treatment. At some point, somebody should say......your pediatrician is not qualified to diagnose this AND that children are usually children and like to fidget. So, feeding them drugs to be comatose in the classroom is generally not a good idea.

But, lets not discuss the facts of the case. Lets ignore the fact that this would require money. Let's ignore the fact that this would require overhauls to the system. Lets ignore the foster kid problem. Lets ignore early childhood education. Lets not read the report but sound off on a generalization that is not found listed in the report at all.

The report is found below.

Just a thought--maybe we should do something other than wage wars. there are other ways to solve problems, believe it or not.
