I remember somewhere in this thread talking about using Electrical Vehicle Battery packs for storing the excess power generated from a PV system. It seems that Tesla is going to build such systems in the giga factory.
In my opinion what is neat about it, is if some safety controls are built into the pack so that you don't overcharge, overheat, freeze, or bring the SOC down too far in the pack. The pack should last a LONG time that way. I actually like Chevy's over-protective design better than I like Teslas....

Tesla Motors co-founder and CEO, Elon Musk remarked last November that the company was hoping to work more closely with Panasonic on the realization of such a goal. The SolarCity chairman announced at the time that the chronic shortage of battery cells on the market was hindering the advancement of the Tesla model.
