WHEN British consumers are compelled to buy energy-efficient lightbulbs from 2012, they will save up to 5m tons of carbon dioxide a year from being pumped into the atmosphere. In China, however, a heavy environmental price is being paid for the production of “green” lightbulbs in cost-cutting factories.

It's interesting how "Green" can be SO unhealthy, as well as harmful to the environment.

It makes sense, not all green technologies use production methodologies that are safe and green...people tend to gloss over that. Some technologies also use of rare materials that require much more earth to be mined and processed to find and extract then traditional materials.

I knew some one who did a project that to manufacture a Prius actually causes as much damage as a much larger vehicle (not operation), because the amount of rare materials and high energy processes required to make it. Plus lead for the batteries, though recyclable, are many times shipped to China and not pleasant to do so like the mercury in florescents...and we know how well thier processes are in order to minimize contamination. He didn't get a good amount of friendly comments on the project.

Lets not forget the cost in carbon to transport said bulbs.

It starts with the glass and elements shipped to the factory assembling the bulbs. Then the finished product shipped to a distributor which then ships it to where it has to go which ships it the retailor.

Massive amounts of carbon being pumped out by trains, ships, trucks and your personal car on your shopping trip in order to "go green".

I use these poison lightbulbs and I like them.
But I'm glad the factories are in China and not in my town.
