We often hear the politicians use Spain as shining example of moving to renewables. Spain has what they call a feed in tariff that forces the power companies to pay the solar energy producers and exorbitant amount for this power. Something like 50 cents a kWh, not sure exactly what it is now but it's a lot. Apparently that isn't enough and they are using diesel generators to take advantage of it.

This is a German site using Google as translator.

During inspections it was established according to press reports alleged that several solar power at night and feeds it into the net. To simulate a larger capacity of the installations, if the operators have connected diesel generators.

According to preliminary estimates, the damage amounts to 2.6 million. "This is just the tip of the iceberg," said one industry expert the newspaper "El Mundo" that brought the scandal to light. If solar systems produce apparently in the dark current, which falls on sooner or later. However, if during daytime electricity generators would be connected, the dizziness was hardly noted.
The bold is mine, if this is widespread the fraud is just part of it because the amount of true solar generation form these installations will be substantially less driving the cost per kwh up.
