I heard that Winston-Salem has a great Arts Scene in Particular and so does Savannah. I never been to Winston-Salem but hear great things about it. Thoughts???
Shopping definitely goes to Winston. It may have an edge in entertainment also, but a lot of concerts and special events in particular that come to the Triad go to Greensboro because it has larger venues. Arts and culture may be more of a tie, with each being home to their respective states' arts schools.
Savannah and Winston-Salem are both interesting and equally exceptional in culture, history, the arts, and entertainment. Both have entertainment facilities, W-S has a larger coliseum, Savannah has a larger convention center across the river. Both are loaded with history. Savannah was a prominent Southern coastal port, along with Charleston, Wilmington and Williamsburg that brought riches and wealth with early settlers of different origins. Winston-Salem was the largest backcountry town in the 18th century founded by the Moravians who initiated old world trades and architecture. Both have exceptional architecture: Savannah has the largest historic district in the nation; Winston-Salem has a living museum in Old Salem that his more original and authentic than Colonial Williamsburg.
Savannah is known for it's Southern charm, early cotton trading, pirates, notoriety of the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil," Dixie Crystal Sugar, & Paula Deen. Winston-Salem is known for banking, tobacco, textiles, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, it's museums and support for the arts. Both have nationally known arts schools: Savannah has SCAD, Winston-Salem UNC School of the Arts.. Winston-Salem might have the edge with other universities like Wake Forest, Salem College (the oldest college for women in the country), and WSSU.
Both are similar in population.
I love both cities, and visit both as often as possible. I am curious why the comparison?
What I mentioned in regard to Winston-Salem relative to the rest of its region (which you can't discount), namely Greensboro, is quite true. It's something that's somewhat unique for multimodal metro areas. And yes, Winston-Salem could use new or newly renovated venues to help attract more events.
