Hi, I'm moving to North Carolina and need to buy a car. I don't currently have one, so I thought of buying a new car in NH since I assume there is no sales taxes and registering in NC. This way I could drive it down and only pay it once to register and get everything set. Does anyone know if this is possible? What what would be the process if I'm buying a brand new car from a dealer? Or should I just wait and buy a car in NC. I understand the sales taxes/ Highway use taxes are 3% of the value of the new car, but if relocating is just $150 for out of state residents. I'm not sure how this would be done in this case... since the vehicle would be bought in NH and registered for the first time in NC.

Opt 1: buy in NH and register in NC
Opt 2: buy in MA and register in NC (taxes in MA are also high)
Opt 3: only buy in NC

Any help is welcomed!

P.S. I still do not have a NC drivers license and will start my lease there a month from now.

Thanks!

From NC DMV: "New to NC or Moving?"
Quote:
...
Step 3
Upon moving to North Carolina from another state, you must register your motor vehicle at the expiration of the time granted by the reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and your prior state of residence (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted, whichever occurs first. You should obtain a North Carolina driver license prior to registering a vehicle.
You'll pay a 3% Highway Use Tax when you register the car in NC, regardless of whether you buy it here or another state. I don't know if NH or MA will give you a temporary tag without paying whatever taxes they charge. When we were moving to NC (from Oregon), I got a temp tag and didn't pay registration fees in OR; I paid the 3% when I got to NC

And welcome!

I'd just buy in NC, especially if you're buying used. The likelihood that the car has seen a lot of salt in NC is lower. The couple hundred bucks you save in taxes won't be worth it if the entire underside of the car is rusted out.

You will get the 20 temp plate from the dealershp in NH when you buy the car.Than just move to NC within that time. And you will just pay the tax in NC.
