Hi. My husband may be transferred to Greensboro and we're wondering how big of a culture shock it might be.
We currently live in Denver and have previously lived in bigger cities in the Midwest. I've always lived in the metro area of big Midwest and east coast cities but my husband grew up in a city of about 100K.
We like what the big city offers (professional sports, theatre, restaurants, major airport, etc.) but we've always wanted to move to NC. However, we've always thought we'd end up in Raleigh, not Greensboro.
We have two young children and are mostly concerned with moving to a community in which we feel comfortable raising them- great schools, extra curricular actives, etc. We live in a planned community now- never thought we'd like it but love what it has to offer for family and kids. We enjoy the mountains but I'm ready to be closer to water.
Has anyone been in a similar situation moving from a big city to Greensboro?
My sister in law lived in Denver and Castle Rock. They relocated to Columbia SC and frequently visited Greensboro. They liked the change especially the seasons. The NCAA is in Greensboro and we get big name entertainers at the local coliseum as well as an abundance of museums and cultural art events. The cost of living will be appreciated in housing. Stick to the NW Greensboro area for private schools as well as great public schools and parks , shopping etc. Raleigh/Durham has southpoint mall which is about an hour away as well as a large Tanger outlet mall 40 minutes away. If you have any questions regarding good docs, dentist or babysitters, let me know , I'd be happy to help. I have worked as an RN in this area!

Greensboro and Winston Salem have great shopping as well, not sure why the suggestion of driving 40 minutes to an hour away...?? Check out the Friendly Center, Hanes Mall and Four Seasons Town Center.
While Greensboro is not Denver size wise, things to do etc. It is not a bad place. I went to university there and enjoyed and have family there. It is a pretty open minded city for the most part. Several universities and colleges near by and Fed Ex is based out of the airport. Good shopping in Greensboro and the Nature Science Center is a great little facility. Honestly I would move there before RDU area if I had a choice.
Meh. At best Greensboro and Winston Salem have adequate shopping.
In some categories it's rather weak.
Perhaps but no reason to drive to a mall an hour away that has pretty much the same stores... Care to expound on what category you find as "just adequate"?

it doesn't have stores like the following
FENDI
Kenneth Cole
Louis Vuitton
Henri Bendel
Free People
Kate Spade
Montblanc
Prada
Salvatore Ferragamo
A|X Armani Exchange
Papyrus
Hermes
Lululemon
St john
Nicole Miller
Cartier
BVLGARI
Which is all in one mall in bigger cities ..
Also with a bigger mall means better place to eat then MCFat
I've not been to Hanes Mall yet. Viamichelin says it is a 40 minute drive from where I live. Too far for regular shopping.. I don't like the Four Seasons Town Center, so perhaps I'll have to check out the Hanes Mall when I have time to drive over there.
Not quite like Pier 1 to me.
